This project is occurring at the request of the client, ADATUM, who has hired our consulting company to design and implement a network infrastructure to address a growing need within the company. ADATUM’s infrastructure is described as supporting a mid-sized, vertically integrated sales and manufacturing environment with roughly 75 employees and 40 workstations. Our overarching solution will support this scale while providing additional considerations for future scalability.
Solution Request#
We advocate in good faith that ADATUM will benefit from an on-premises solution utilizing Microsoft Server 2022, which will sufficiently support the company’s requests while maintaining a high degree of scalability for future considerations, such as expanding the userbase, additional workstations, deployment of cloud services and adding secondary/tertiary domain controllers if requested. Additionally, the IT department has specifically requested the ability to track and monitor environmental health, as well as security auditing.
High Level Approach#
The objective is to establish a functional and scalable Windows Server 2022 environment for ADATUM’s production environment. The deployment will provide a centralized authentication system, policy enforcement, networking services including a privatized company VPN, high availability services and proactive environmental monitoring with built-in tools.
Technical Architecture#
This solution will be entirely on-premises using Windows Server 2022, the latest version (as of March, 2025) of Microsoft’s flagship server operating system. This server operating system is designed for business workloads and offers sufficient features to satisfy ADATUM’s solution request.
Windows Server 2022 will be deployed on a single domain controller, with consideration for a secondary domain controller (preferably cloud-based), at the request of ADATUM’s IT department. For this documentation, we cover only the primary domain controller while configuring the architecture to support additional domain controllers in the future.
Management roles and features will be implemented directly within Windows Server 2022. All solutions to ADATUM’s requests will be contained with the primary domain controller, ensuring centralized access and control. This approach will minimize complexity while the IT department becomes familiar with the new system and allows for a turnkey handoff, with the minimal support required to maintain the system thereafter.
Project Management Approach#
The estimated project completion timeline is two months, broken into two key milestones:
- Documentation Planning
- A heavy amount of information is contained within the documentation and planning stages of this project. A fair amount of coordination and collaboration between ADATUM’s departments will likely be required for this stage.
- Technical Documentation & Installation
- Basic installation of features and configuration changes and adjustments are made during this stage to ready the domain controller for the IT department to later configure and deploy.
Once completed, an IT handoff procedure will occur to provide documentation and training for IT staff to configure the final proposal and maintain/expand the system as ADATUM’s operational requirements evolve.
