Business Scenario
#

This project is occurring because AdventureWorks is experiencing limitations with its current on-premises data infrastructure, which is unable to scale effectively to meet the growing needs of the business in its current offline format.

Solution Request
#

The company has requested a cloud-based solution to migrate its database and web application to a more modern and scalable environment. This migration aims to improve customer access to product information, streamline internal reporting processes, and reduce the ongoing costs associated with maintaining legacy systems. Additionally, the ability to provide other customers with hosted reviews that are accessible to everyone will allow the company to monitor crucial insights and adjust business practices and product offerings accordingly. My role is to design and implement a cloud-based solution using AWS that addresses these needs and enhances both operational efficiency and customer experience, and it is my belief that proposing this solution will benefit the company’s requests and needs most effectively.

High Level Approach
#

The goal of this project is to develop a scalable, cloud-based infrastructure for AdventureWorks that integrates the company’s existing database and web application into Amazon Web Services (AWS). This solution will involve setting up two AWS EC2 instances. The objective is to create a minimum viable product that demonstrates data accessibility and reliability, as well as convenience features such as review portals, ratings, a searchable database, and images associated with the product offerings, allowing the company to easily scale as its data and user demands increase.

Technical Architecture
#

This solution will be entirely cloud-based using Ubuntu Server 22.04, a Linux-based, open-source server platform, on two AWS EC2 instances. One instance will serve as the database server, hosting the AdventureWorks database using MySQL. This will ensure reliable data management and enable the company’s internal teams to efficiently access and manage their data.

The second EC2 instance will act as the web server, which will host and serve the AdventureWorks web application. This setup will allow customers and employees to access the product information via a user-friendly interface, improving both operational efficiency and customer experience.

To access management for these two servers and to implement the solution in its entirety, we will use either PuTTY or another SSH management platform, such as the terminal interface on a Linux installation. We prefer PuTTY in this instance, as it is a free and open-source SSH/Telnet Client. We will also utilize a file sharing application such as FileZilla or WinSCP to transfer the database and web application packages directly to the instances hosted in AWS.

Project Management Approach
#

This project will be executed in phases to ensure smooth implementation and alignment with AdventureWorks’ business goals. The first phase involves setting up the AWS environment and migrating the database, followed by testing to ensure data integrity and system performance. The second phase focuses on deploying the web application on EC2 instances and integrating it with the database. After successful testing, the project will have an official handoff to AdventureWorks’ IT team. Regular milestone reviews will be conducted with stakeholders to ensure that the project stays on track, with a final product delivered within the agreed one-month timeframe.
